This box held up well to travel, and it's latches seem to work well. The seal in the lid does it's job holding liquidy foods in even when tipped up on end or on it's side. The only complaint is that the little inner dividers don't go all the way up to touch the lid, which would be an awesome improvement for this series of bento boxes. (Also, as it turns out, the little bag can hold two of thses boxes stacked, so you can pack two lunches in one bag!)

My daughter is using this lunchbox for the 2nd year. It still looks new. The inside is white, not the gray/silver lined type which I read can sometimes contains lead. I feel that my child's lunch is safe and she is not picking up lead from the inside of the lunchbox. She really likes it and hasn't asked for a new one. She'll probably use it next year as well.

I purchased 2 sets of the Bento Buddies 2.0 Containers for my son who is in Kindergarten. We have used them for about 5 weeks now and LOVE THEM!! They are very easy for him to open and close. I place them in his regular lunchbox and the square/rectangle shapes make it easy to fit everything. We actually haven't used the larger sandwich size yet b/c it's pretty big. Instead, I just cut his sandwich in half and place the 2 halves on top of each other in the next smaller size.

I love the fact that these containers make me stop and think about what I put in his lunchbox. I always put a fruit in one, a veggie in one, a dip or almonds in the smallest one, a sandwich in one, and then a snack in the last one (this is why I purchased TWO sets of the containers).

They are dishwasher safe and do NOT leak while in the lunchbox since all 4 containers come withe LIDS. I think you will be very happy with these containers :)

Packing your child's lunch just got more complicated. The question of "what's for lunch?" has now been expanded to "what's your lunch packaging", as parents are faced with product safety issues, new school waste mandates and reducing their family's environmental footprint.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation estimates that one student taking a disposable lunch to school each day will create 45 to 90 pounds of garbage per year.

In an effort to teach children about the environmental impact of their food and beverage choices, and focus on reducing, recycling, and reusing to avoid waste, many schools are committed to reducing waste on campus. One method is to encourage parents to pack a "waste-free" lunch. This means everything in your child's lunchbox is reusable or consumable. Schools such as Marin Primary School in Marin, California, are not only recycling and composting, but they have done away with plastic utensils, cups, and plates by washing reusable plates that the children have made themselves.

Local children's cloth napkin company, Fabkins, is working with schools to provide children's size napkins for fundraisers, classroom party baskets, and lunchrooms throughout the country. While Kids Konserve offers stainless steel food containers, sandwich wraps and safe party ware for kids' lunches and celebrations.

The number of children's product recalls due to lead paint, poor plastics, and PVC have increased dramatically. Luckily there is a big "green" market to fill the void of safe products, when it comes to lunchboxes and food Storage. There are many fun and colorful lead-free, old-fashioned metal lunchboxes as well as soft PVC- and lead-free lunch totes that children can choose from. Allowing your child to choose is important so your child is proud of his lunchbox and excited to see and eat what's inside.

Pack food, drink and soups in reusable, non-plastic containers and thermos bottles. Containers made from stainless steel and aluminum reduces waste and concern of leaching of toxins such as Bisphenol A, which is linked to birth defects, miscarriage, and prostate cancer.

Wrap sandwiches in reusable sandwich wraps, such as by Wrap-n-Mat. Opt for foil over plastic wrap and baggies. Unlike waxed paper and plastic wrap, aluminum foil is available in 100 percent recycled form, is recyclable in most areas, withstands heat and cold, and works better than plastic and waxed paper at keeping moisture in. Aluminum is also oil free and is not made from petroleum, the way that wax and plastic are. Reduce landfill waste by eliminating plastic bag use, as they can last up to 1,000 years.

Provide metal or ceramic utensils that can be reused and washed. Just remind your child to bring them home. Or provide bamboo renewable and biodegradable forks and spoons, rather than plastic.

Include a Reusable Cloth Napkin. Whether it's a regular size, cocktail or child cloth napkin these absorb well and help reduce paper waste.

I was so excited about getting this lunch box for my daughter and was sadly disappointed when it arrived.
There was not one thing that we didn't like in a big way.... it was a bunch of little things.
It's quite large (the carrying tote)
The main clasp on the outer plastic container (not the tote) is hard to open and yet also didn't give me any confidence that over time, it would stay closed.
Two of the small inside containers do not come with lids (it does show this in the photo - I guess I assumed they would come with lids) which seems odd.
The small ones with lids are a bit of a challenge to get open for little hands.

I'm sure it is a system that might work for others but for us, it just wasn't what we hoped it would be.

These are well made enough and no doubt will hold up for a long time. However, I like to be able to see through the container-which you cannot with these. I also like to microwave my hot meals and you cannot do this with the metal containers. The divided one is rather small and you cannot remove the divider. Another minor annoyance: they also make a lot of noise banging together in the lunchbox as you walk if you do not put something between them. (I also carry cans of pop, which makes a lot of metal banging around) I know plastic has its drawbacks, but that is my personal preference.

Unlike many reviewers for this product, I'm a dedicated bring-your-own lunch person -- I've been making my own lunches since college. I used to bring lunch in a Ziploc bag or sealed plastic container, and for a while I had a lightly-insulated soft lunch"box". Usually I didn't have trouble, but sometimes things would leak or get squashed. When I started riding my bike to work and going all over the place on public transit, I really wanted something that would never leak out of its container, and would be easy to carry in a backpack or by hand. I also needed something that would hold quite a bit of food because I tend to get hungry in the afternoon and eating work-supplied popcorn and soda is not how I want to get my calories.

So far I've been very happy with the Mr. Bento container. It's easy to carry -- it fits right into my backpack, which my lunchbox and many plastic containers were a bit too wide for. I can also easily carry it in hand if I am walking from the train to work -- it is not uncomfortably heavy. It holds enough food for a big lunch and a snack. I've packed soup several times, as well as foods with some liquid (like fruit cobbler -- yum!) in the smaller side containers, and everything stays clean and inside the container. A bagel even fits whole into the main container and makes a great side with soup.

I tried the insulating properties the first day that I used it and wasn't incredibly impressed. My soup was still quite warm but not hot and other containers were not that warm. However, it's possible that I just did not prepare the jar or the food properly. Since I am pressed for time in the morning, but not at lunchtime, and I have access to a microwave, I usually just heat my food at work, and haven't tried the insulation since then. I don't microwave food in the bowls, although it says you can if you leave the lids off, because I have had bad luck in the past with various plastic containers getting a little "cooked" (crisp and bubbly) in the microwave, so I just don't heat stuff in plastic anymore. We have plenty of bowls at work, luckily.

An unforeseen benefit is that I am getting excited about packing my lunches again. When I started out making my lunch I put more work into it, but I got bored after a while and started just grabbing some leftovers and maybe some fruit for work, or just a sandwich and fruit. Now I am willing to get up a little earlier and cut up fruit or veggies and prepare something for the side, so I get more variety, which also means I am more satisfied and better nourished. I love to unpack my lunch and look at all my food before I settle down to eat. I am excited about learning to do some true bento-style lunches in the future too, and maybe even using it for breakfast on the go!

I highly recommend this lunchbox for anyone who's serious about bringing lunch to work or school, and especially anyone who already does, but wants to make lunch fun again. I would have given it five stars except for three things:

- The soup container is too small and there is no other option for something that's mostly liquid. I sometimes like a lot of soup at lunchtime and I can't do that with this box.
- The temperature maintenance did not impress me right away.
- The containers are not dishwasher safe. This doesn't matter to me since I don't have a dishwasher, but it is a big deal for a lot of people.
[Update 11/20/06] - The metallic finish on the outside of the jar is "painted" and can be scratched. This just happened to me recently and I wish they had just left it plain; I am worried now that all the paint will peel off. But this is purely cosmetic.
[Update 12/20/07] - No more scratches have appeared un the finish, and I am still using and loving my Mr. Bento nearly every day. However, I have gotten a bit bored of making lunch again!

But overall, it is a quality product and excellent way to bring satisfying lunches with you when you travel. I am still loving it and using it nearly every day more than a month after the original review date. Friends I have given it to as a gift have also raved about it!

We love this lunch box! We originally got it for our 2 year old son to take to preschool, but it's so great that I'm buying 2 more for my husband and I as well! It's great for portioning your meals and I personally think it's plenty of room, but I've heard others say it's too small. You do have to get creative with the way you pack your lunch, but at the same time I think it makes you more conscious of how much you really need to eat in the first place! It fit's perfectly into the zip-up lunch bag that we got for our son, just make sure you check the measurements to see that it will fit in the bag. Very pleased. It even comes with silverware!
Only thing...I would suggest also buying some extra bento buddies (which are different sized inserts) so you can keep your packing options open. The extra lids may come in handy as well, as this one only comes with 3 lids.

Alright, first off, I'm a month into this thing and I'm still liking it enough to use it so there's that said.

Now here's what's WRONG with it:
1. The lid is NOT insulated as one might expect. This means that your top container of food gets colder (or warmer) much, much faster than the rest
2. No clip, clamp, slot or other place to keep your spork should you decide to forgo the canvas case.
3. The clips that hold the lid on feel flimsy, though as stated in other reviews, they have yet to break so I suppose I might be picky here.

What's great about it?
1. The portion sizes are fantastic for me. I'm on a diet that encourages many small meals and these containers are a great size.
2. the overall build quality seems good
3. The concept is extremely good and does translate well into practice.
4. I've likely saved $200 in the month I've been carrying this sucker to work (still taking into account the price of the food I've been packing in it and the price of the box itself)

I could not resist getting this lunch bento because it was cute. I had been lunch box shopping and found a traditional one that I really like, but spied this one and bought it on impulse. That said, I also have to admit that I had a hard time envisioning how big this was going to be by reading the dimensions--it is really big!! It will hold enough for two people with ease. It is made of melamine, which means you cannot microve it, it will need an insulated carrying bag to stay cold/warm for long. It latches shut with a decent feeling metal clasp--it is not meant to be watertight, so do not pack liquids in it!

I found it fit perfectly in my old Maxcold lunch box, which is 9.5 inches tall and 8.5 inches long. This is ideal for insulating the bento. I can fit a small, slim ice pack in the bag after I place the bento. I also sometimes put one small pack in the middle container of the bento and place it in the lunch box for insulation.

Oddly enough, immediately after I ordered this, Amazon put a note saying it was no longer available due to misinformation. I am not sure what that means--the product seems to be exactly what was written. It is just hard to envision it as a lunch box since the tiffin concept is "foreign" to us in America. That is not the product's fault.

I hate Tupperware. I never feel like it's clean. I always feel like it always smells like foods that have been stored in it long after it's been washed. In this video, Betty demonstrates how to make Autumn Pumpkin Molasses Muffins, using sorghum in the place of molasses. I purchased a jar of sorghum at the 3rd Annual Sorghum Festival in Richmond, Kentucky, that Rick and I attended. (You can see the sorghum festival in the previous video.) These muffins are made with sorghum, but I am going to write up the recipe with molasses, because the two syrups taste very much the same, and I think it will be easier for you to find molasses! Ingredients: ½ cup butter or margarine, softened ¾ cup firmly packed brown sugar 1 cup canned pumpkin ¼ cup molasses 1 egg 1 ¾ cups self-rising flour ¾ teaspoon baking soda ½ cup chopped pecans cooking oil spray In a large bowl, cream ½ cup butter or margarine with ¾ cup brown sugar, and then beat with an electric mixer until smooth. Add 1 cup canned pumpkin, ¼ cup molasses, and 1 egg. Beat well. Combine 1 ¾ cups self-rising flour and ¾ teaspoon baking soda. Add to butter mixture, and stir until dry ingredients are moistened. Stir in ½ cup pecans. Spoon batter into muffin pans that have been sprayed with cooking oil spray, filling two-thirds full. Bake at 375 degrees for 20 minutes. Let cool slightly in pan, and then remove to a nice serving plate. These muffins are scrumptious on a fall day, along with a mug of hot apple cider!

I just purchased this Laptop Lunch in black. My five year old boy, a brand new Kindergartner, didn't like his purple one (too girly for his taste now). We have been using the Laptop Lunch system for his three years in preschool and love it. It's configurable, easy to clean and the plastic is sturdy so the compartment pieces never get mistaken by the teachers for disposables like some of the other lunch kits I've tried.

I ordered this one in black and dislike the giant "Laptop Lunch" logo plastered across the top of the outside container box, which is new. It looks like shwag from a tradeshow and cheapens the whole kit. I'm going to find a waterproof sticker to put over it. The inside boxes now all have corny, to my mind, vegetable graphics on them too. Not a big deal, but I have enjoyed packing my sons lunches in these containers and prefer to let the food itself do the talking.

I had originally wanted a Mr. Bento, but I'm not the type who eats a large amount, especially for lunch, so I opted to purchase the Ms. Bento. It's just the right size for me. As long as you follow the directions, the food stays nice and warm for a hefty amount of time. I usually make my lunch at 7am, and then eat it at 1pm, and it's always still toasty. I usually heat everything almost to boiling, though, so that probably helps. (I have yet to use it for cold food.)
It's fairly easy to clean by hand. I have managed to stain my bottom soup container, but that's really my own fault. I haven't met a plastic container that doesn't get stained from microwaving tomato soup.
I love that it comes with a spork. I'm not the best at eating with chopsticks.
I have been trying to convince my sister to purchase one of these, but she thinks they are too expensive.

I have been using the LunchBots Duo Stainless Lunch Container AND the LunchBots Uno Stainless Containers for about 2 years. I like that these products are Stainless Steel and are REUSABLE. Both sizes are really nice and fit well in my son's lunchbox with room still for an icepack.

In the Uno container, I usually put a sandwich, yogurt, or a salad. The Duo container is great for veggies, fruit, pretzels, etc. The only negative is that the Duo divider does NOT touch the bottom which means something watery like watermelon will leak across to the other side and get that food soggy.

My first son used these when he was 3 and 4 years old and now my second son is using them and he's 2. The lids are very easy for little ones to open and close.

Two reasons why I gave 4 stars instead of 5 stars:
1. the divider can leak liquid across to the other side
2. the lid scratches and the paint can rub off (I stack them on top of each other in the lunchbox which rubs the lid)

FYI...the paint on my first set 2 years ago was defective and literally PEELED off within 2 months!! I called Amazon, they sent me a return label to send them back, and they shipped me out 2 new ones right away!! Great customer service :)

You will be happy with these containers :) They are definitely worth the price!!

I really like this bento. The design is ample, but compact. I like the included utensils (this was something I always used to forget!), as well as the extra insulation from the bag. These are great. I had seen a few average reviews about the way the steel is forged on the sides....and I can say that is definitely not the case. Maybe there was a bad lot made before and has since changed, but these are made with quite good quality. They are perfect for kids or adults' lunches or snacks. And it's nice as it keeps the 2 compartments completely separate (mind you it's not made for anything with liquids).

I like the lunch bag. It's a little hard to clean tho but I get compliments at work. Everyone thinks its a purse for some reason. It's a good size if u bring a juice box and sandwich in the main compartment. Sometimes I like to bring a hot lunch in a container which won't fit in the main compartment. It's too skinny. You'll have to get an airtight container and put it on its side. And don't plan on bringing any snacks to much on throughout the day in it also.

I was expecting the product to be a good way for me to bring a nutritious lunch to work. But I hate using it. It's incredibly heavy even without food in it. Each stacking dish is so large, I end up putting more food in than I want to eat. If you fill up the whole jar, you'll have at least 2 meals.
It doesn't keep foods as hot as it should (everything was lukewarm by the time lunch rolled around. I haven't tried anything cold yet.
It's too large to fit in any other bag, so it ends up being one more thing to carry.
Finally, I've been very aware of the plastics that seep into food - I hoped that this would be a good alternative. But all the dishes are plastic (not dishwasher safe).
What a waste of money!

Bought this over a year ago, have used it a fair amount, and I'm pleased with it overall.

PROS:

The thermos jar does a good job maintaining temperature. The container most likely to contain hot food (the big one) fits second from the bottom.

The bag is really useful- it makes it easy to carry and provides a place to stash utensils and a napkin (unlike other thermos jars).

The combination of container sizes is good. There's a big one, two medium ones, and a little one- main dish, two sides, and a snack.

CONS:

The "soup" container- the little bowl with the rubber seal- doesn't work well. To get a good watertight seal, you need to close it so tight that it's almost impossible to open without spilling. Also the rubber seal, like all rubber seals, picks up food and odors and is tricky to clean. I ended up removing the seal and using the container for dry food like trail mix or veggies.

OTHER:

Because all the smaller containers are inside one large thermos jar, you can either pick hot or cold, not both. If you pack a hot entree, your sides will also warm up a bit. If you put carrot sticks and cookies in with hot pasta, they will not be cold at lunchtime.

The packaging says that the containers are not dishwasher safe. I've been putting them in the dishwasher regularly, and they're fine. Just treat them like any other plastic dish (keep them away from the heating element).

The big "main dish" container is not ideal for sandwiches, because it's round. It's great for rice (its intended use), or leftovers- noodles, mac and cheese, curry, whatever, as long as it's not too soupy (the container's not watertight). If you leave that container out, the next container in the stack rests on the rim of the jar without sliding down. This leaves space for a sandwich or a bagel or whatever, as long as it's roughly the same size as the external dimensions of the missing container.

If you leave out the top containers, there's room for a piece of fruit or a bag of chips under the lid instead.

THE BOTTOM LINE:

This is really a good, useful product, with lots of room to pack a filling and varied meal, but keep your expectations reasonable. The "soup" container is not terribly useful, so if you want to pack soup, pack a full serving in a different thermos. You can keep your whole lunch at a good temperature together, but not two different temperatures. The rice container is great for rice; if you're not packing rice (or similar), don't use it.

i thought this was the cutest thing and my daughter loves it. it's a great size for her school snack, not so bulky as a whole lunch box, but she can fit a few snack size things in there plus a juice box. the interior is lined so any leaks should stay contained unless they drip out the top. my only complaint is that it's not thermal lined, so you really have to put a cold pack in side if you have something that needs to say cold like yogurt or a cold drink.

I got this so I could have more vegetables with my meals. I have ordered Laptop Lunch before but found their boxes to be too small.

This one comes in a box, with a bag, a metal container, 4 plastic containers and a spork (spoon/fork combo). The lids fit well.

The first day my husband and I took it to work, both our container fell sideways, and I am happy to find that nothing leaked (one of the containers contained soup, one an entree with gravy, and one container with a juicy fruit).

We don't put hot food in there, because we have access to microwaves at work. The hardest part for me was figuring out how to get all the heated food from the common room microwave back to my office. The method I use now is I just leave the cold stuff at my desk, and bring just the containers that need to be heated to the microwave (Note: the lid isn't microwaveable). Then I put the lids back on all the hot stuff, then put them into the metal container and bring it back to my desk. Now I have a nice well-balanced and attractive meal!

The containers look small, but when you use all 4 containers, it's a little too much food for me!

Making a well-balanced meal was also a pleasant surprise, it is much easier than I expected. Usually we have some leftovers, then I add fruit, add some veggies in another container, heat up some soup in the morning and then let them all cool before putting them into the containers.

The only suggestion is that I would have liked a space to put some blue ice to keep everything cool.

Actually getting food into and out of this container is a REAL PAIN. The four clasps are extremely tight and it takes a lot of pressure to close them. And opening it is another adventure... especially the top lid. It is so tight that it really takes a LOT of effort to pry off, and I'm not a weak person! I'm constantly worried that the force used to remove the top lid will result in the spilling of its contents all over myself and the table. For those of you who may not know, this system is very similar to the stainless steel stacking lunch jars which make their rounds in India. The "tiffin tins" are delivered to businesses by bicycle and typically contain various vegetarian curries/vegetables along with jasmine-steamed basmati rice in another of the stacked tin levels. This is an excellent (though not overly cheap) replacement for those who might want to try this style of "brown-bagging." I, for one, purchased this in order to force myself to bring my own lunch rather than going out to eat. This worked very well for me, where I would fill one container with salad, soup, or yogurt with berries. Then I put some chicken or other meat in one layer, perhaps some crackers and cheese in another, and then some carrots/celery (or, ahem, a cookie or two) to top it off. You can bundle all of that up in the container and happily go to work, knowing that you are set for eats for the entire day even if the day is a long one. One word of caution, while one of the stack-able containers is perfect for soup (with a rubber gasket, and steam-release one-way valve), in general it is good practice not to invert this guy too much. I have found on a few occasions (over the past two years of use) that this can lead to salad dressing from other compartments spilling into the main jar. This wouldn't be a big deal, other than you just need to clean the main jar at the end of the day as well. Great product and perfect way to maintain your eating habits.

I bought this product for almost half the price at my local store here in Virginia. However, if you don't live near a place sometimes it is worth the markup to order online.

It is a cute little box. You can use the separate areas or you can remove them and use the box open. I like the way the lid pops on. Be careful as the lid can crack. I have a Mr. Bento and really do like it, but it's pretty big and I don't always want that much food. The Ms. Bento is just about perfect for those days I want eat a little bit lighter. The bag is terrific and has enough extra room in there to throw in a small piece of fruit or little Tupperware containers for dressing, etc., something I can't do with the spouse. It keeps things cold or warm (not hot after a few hours, but warm's not bad) as advertised, though I tend to keep everything cold and nuke the portions I need heated as I rarely want everything hot, and putting the salad in the same jar with the piping hot soup is not a great idea. I recently got interested in the bento box rage and decided to check it out. This is my first "real" bento, although I have been packing my lunch in various containers for years. When I opened the box I was first struck by how pretty the design is--the reason I chose this particular bento in the first place. Secondly I was startled and angered by the small size for the price. I did not research just how big "650 ml" was and was thinking it would be a fairly large oblong with at least a large sandwich sized container and two fairly good sized snack containers partitioned off.

I did think the box was well made, a nice sturdy plastic with secure feeling snaps. The inner boxes are also sturdy and fit well. The bag is also quite cute, and may hold a small granola bar in with the bento. But I still was angry at the size for the price.

Finally, I did some research on the bento concept as put forth by the Japanese. I found that this bento is the size actually recommended for one meal for my age and height. 650 ml translates to 650 calories if the bento is packed with the Japanese mind set and not the usual American fatty fare. Well, I decided to test the accuracy of this, just to prove that the box was overpriced and useless for an adult.

Did I get a surprise! I prepared a meal with the Japenese recommendations in mind. I put a rice combo in the large container. I measured out the cooked rice combo in a standard measuring cup, then filled the large compartment. It held half cup of the rice combo. I filled the other two compartments with carrots and fruit, thinking that this would not be enough to fill me. To my surprise, I found that I was satisfied, not stuffed the way I normally feel when I pack this the usual way (with about triple the amount of rice), but not hungry. I also had to admit to myself that my old portions were actually way too big calorie wise--the bento portions were actually ideal for weight control. I am a visual person, so having a container that "shows" me the correct portion size is a big help. I always tend to overguess otherwise. Previously I had eaten enough calories in one meal to almost make the entire daily total of what I should be eating. Turns out the 650 ml is just right for one meal -about 650 calories if packed the recommended way.

I have since gone through most of my other containers and took note of the ml. According to the Japanese standard, they are huge, and I was packing several of them. No wonder I could not seem to lose weight as I thought I should! See [...] for the recommended sizes.

I do not believe it is necessary to have an expensive Japanese bento to eat according to healthy guidelines. You could easily find a correct sized rubbermaid box for less, but I personally benefit from seeing and handling the smaller Japanese bento boxes. I still think it is a bit overpriced--but I would buy it again to help with my portion control. And the cute design and bag.

What a huge disappointment from a company that makes the best rice cookers in the world - my mistake for thinking they could make a good Bento kit. My husband and I typically use several containers of tupperware for our lunches, so I thought we'd give this a shot. Does keep food warm if you preheat the 'tube' and the containers as stated. However, by 6 hours it was just warm, and not nearly as hot as expected. Although the Ms. Bento size surprised me, each container seems so small, we are more than full by the end of our lunch meals.

Make sure to pack items that will fill you up though. You have to think what your packing. The main container holds rice and a main with sauce very well, and I suggest using mostly rice or noodles as a base.

We're still playing with food combinations, but we love them. Even the spork is good quality.

Only complaint is you have to hand wash everything and the grease from foods takes a while to scrub off.

I'm only on my fourth Mr. Bento lunch day, but already I'm loving it! The only complaint I have is that the upper two bowls with the snap on lids don't stay cold. It's difficult to mix hot and cold the way that this is designed. You either need to make a cold/room temp lunch or warm/room temp lunch. There are some ingenious ways you can mix temperatures though, from making a metal disk out of roof flashing to reflect heat to freezing yogurt or pudding into the lower of the two upper bowls to keep them cool. I've found that works very well, my yogurt is defrosted by lunch time and the upper bowl has in turn been kept cold, but the lower two bowls are still piping hot. I haven't found that freezing yogurt has any unappetizing affect on the yogurt's texture or taste.

The bowls are indeed quite large, and even with a vegetarian diet (generally considered to be low-calorie), I have no problems stuffing my Mr. Bento with 800-900 calories worth of food. That's a very large meal! I usually eat 400-500 in one sitting, so I use some bowls for lunch and others for snacks. The possibilities in combinations are endless, and I'm enjoying coming up with new ideas for snacks and meals. Today was mulligatawny soup, quinoa with fresh mozzarella and eggplant-tomato ragu, yogurt with pineapple and granola, and chickpea salad. The outer pocket on the carrying case is the perfect place to fit my 3pm protein bar and is useful for carrying napkins and a sandwich bag of granola so it doesn't get mushy.

I'm not really in need of keeping foods hot or cold at work since we have both a fridge and microwave, though both are questionable in regards to cleanliness. It's nice not to have to "heat and eat", since I can do that in the morning when I pack the jar. I just open up my Mr. Bento and start eating. Neat! Mr. Bento's usefulness really comes into play after bike races. My teammates will be sitting around nibbling on a sports bar and protein shake, meanwhile I'm stuffing my face with hot daal, basmati rice and garlic naan. Can we say jealous!??!

Yes, $40+ might be a bit much for a lunch box, but I figure I only need to bring my lunch 4x a week for 2 weeks to break even on eating out. Plus, I tend to pack much healthier foods and I know what the calorie content is of everything in my lunch jar... something that can't be said when dining out.

I was really excited to get this container, and when pulling it out of the box did a jump for joy because it's really a beautiful item. However, when latching the top of the box, the top section lid falls into the container. I just don't think the lip is substantial enough with the pressure of the latch. I'm so sad. It's such a beautiful pail, it really is. I just think because of the pyramid design, it doesn't work quite right. I'm going to try to contact the company, but will probably end up returning it and getting the regular straight sided style.
UPDATE** I just talked to customer service for to-go ware. She has never heard of anyone having this issue, so hopefully it's just an isolated problem. I'm going to show my husband, since he is who the box is for and let him decide whether he wants to return it for another one of the same style, or go for the other.

Ever since the reports about the risks of chemicals leeching from plastics that have been microwaved, I've been wary of carrying microwaveable lunches to work. I was very happy to find this lunch jar. I chose to buy the Classic Lunch Jar instead of the four-container Mr. Bento because I wanted the larger volume, but I have found that the Classic Lunch Jar can hold more food than I can eat (I'm a woman who can put away a large prime rib for dinner, but not in need of huge quantities for lunch). The middle container for the Classic Lunch Jar, which stands about 3.5 inches deep and 4 inches wide, is cavernous, and can alone hold more than a modest dinnerplate's worth of food.

I've found that putting soup into the bottom container is essential to keeping the middle container hot. It acts as the heat pack for the middle container. I usually heat canned soup in the morning in a pan, and pour it near-boiling into the container, and drop it into the bottom of the jar to start off. After 4 hours, the soup will still be too hot to eat!

Then, for the middle container, I heat up some leftover starches (rice, potatoes, etc.) and some sort of entree. I put the starches on the bottom, and pile the entree on top. The lid of the middle container has a hollow space built in to insulate it from the top container. The food in the middle container is still quite hot after 4 hours.

The top container should be reserved for something that would be eaten at room temperature. I think it was designed that way, judging by the pictures on the packaging. I can't read Japanese, so I was only able to guess. The picture shaded the jar from red to orange to yellow to white, starting from the bottom, which accurately corresponds to the temperature of my food after 4 hours (red being hottest, white being room temp).

I've tried putting an entree in the top container, to separate it from the starches, but it had cooled to near room temperature by the time I opened it 4 hours later. On the other hand, I've also put salad in there, and the salad was unmarred by the heat of the bottom containers after 4 hours.

If you're going to put cold food into the top container, I would recommend that you leave the top inch of the middle container empty as a heat buffer.

The only awkward thing about the container is that the soup container has a rubber ring gasket and a tiny dime-sized rubber vent cover, both of which need to be popped off and cleaned after each use. Otherwise, gunk will get into the gaps and get really gross. I've found that sticking the pointy end of the chopstick into the gasket groove will pry the thing out easily, and the valve cover is easy enough to take off. My only concern is that I swear that I'm going to lose or break either of them one day soon. But if that's the secret to being able to keep soup boiling hot for hours in a container that screws shut without leaking, then I'm willing to put in the extra effort.

Needless to say, I love this lunch jar, and would recommend it to anyone.

I have been using this bag for about 6 months now and I love it! I take my breakfast and lunch with me to work each day and this bag holds it all. I put a flat cold pack underneath and one on top of the food in the lower compartment and it keeps everything cold all day and into the evening. It even keeps the upper compartment cold enough to keep something cool. The zippers work fine and the outer material is pretty much indestructible. The one thing that prevented me from giving it 5 stars is that after about 3 months of usage, the plastic/vinyl lining material started to crack and split- especially near the zipper and in fact gets caught in the zipper at times. I've had to tape some areas to prevent it from getting into the zipper. This affects the aesthetics more than the function and it is not enough of a nuisance to prohibit me from giving this bag a very positive 2 thumbs up!

Bought the Unos & Duos for my sons lunches this year and I love them. The Uno is the perfect size for a sandwich even with the larger bread and the duos have more than enough room for a small cut up apple and something else. I have no issues with how they're made as another review pointed out. I do see a dimple on the side, but it's barely even noticeable to me. I love this container - we use it everyday. The Duo is also getting a workout. They protect fruit and other more fragile edibles nicely, and are pretty and cheerfully designed, to boot. We're happy not to be using plastic.

Lunch is fun with Mr. Bento! I echo all of the comments listed below. I would add that I do not eat rice daily and at first the rice container seemed useless for non-dry items. I like to put a can of veggies in that container, but the juice leaks and pools at the bottom of the vacuum canister. With a small sheet of press and seal wax paper, my mess goes away.
